NITA Uganda Executive Director Mr. Sakwa and Investment state minister Hon. Evelyn Anite have flagged off a consignment of 18,000 smart and feature phones to be exported to Morroco joining the list of phone-exporting countries.
The exportation comes just a few months since the President of Uganda commissioned the mobile phone, computer manufacturing and assembling factory in Namanve Industrial Park, Wakiso District.
SIMI is also to start production of affordable gadgets (temperature testing Gadgets and protective gear) to help in the fight against
These are produced by Uganda’s first ICT manufacturing and Assembling Factory launched last year by HE. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Minister Evelyn Anite had this to say,
“This morning, I had the pleasure of flagging off the first batch of Ugandan made mobile phones manufactured by Uganda’s first phone manufacturing plant (SIMI Technologies) to Morocco.
This is a step towards reducing Uganda’s import bill on ICT products & boosting export earnings.
Not only is this plant contributing to the economic growth and development of Uganda but it’s immensely helping in building local capacity through transfer of ICT knowledge and skills.
Big thanks to H.E Kaguta Museveni for tirelessly ensuring that the environment is ripe for investors.”
In addition to manufacturing phones and laptops, SIMI Technologies has also started manufacturing protective eyewear & affordable Digital Temperature Guns which will go for as low as UGX 50,000shs in an effort to help fight against the #COVIDー19 pandemic.
The assembly plant of the SIMI S300 phones promised to run three production lines at full capacity; each line with daily production of 2,000 feature phones, 1,500 smartphones, 800 laptops, 2,000 chargers, 4,000 USB cables, and 4,000 sets of earphones and directly employing more than 400 staff.
Each SIMI S300 costs only UGX 20,000 ($5.24) but this price point should not be surprising given that fact that its a feature phone. The aim of government was to reduce in the importation of such devices.
